Bobbins & Threads

Those who read the section Fiona know that all the things I like or find interesting can become my next hobby so I’m taking this opportunity to introduce one of them.

lace

Lace making is a lot more than weave threats. It is an art that can still be learnt.
It is difficult to establish a precise origin of lace making. Lace was manufactured back in the 15th century. The lace industry provided a way of living for many people. Children used to learn the art of lace making in schools and convents.
If we talk about handmade lace, there are two major types:

  • Needle lace is made by embroidering with a needle and a single threat on a delicate mesh. A pattern is also used to produce this precious and delicate textile.
  • Bobbin lace is made on a special pillow, using bobbins, threat, pins and a pattern drawn in a parchment.
In the past, lace was usually made with linen or silk threats.  Today, we still find the same materials and sometimes cotton.

There are several styles of lace but I will only elaborate on the five I know. I’m including some pictures of the pieces I made while learning the art.

Torchon: is well known and one of the oldest kinds of lace. It has geometrical forms.   Anyone starting this hobby will begin with this style.

Cluny: dates back to the middle of the 19th century. It is inspired by an older type known as guipure.

Russian lace: dates back to the 17th century. The techniques originate mostly from Belgium and France but Russian artists designed their own patterns giving this type of lace a different look. The interlacing strings forming the design are typical for this kind of lace.

Chrysanthemum: has a typical flowery design. In one composition, each component of the whole design is made individually. The shape of the petal of the chrysanthemum can easily be identified in the designs.

Duchesse: was very popular in the 19th century. Floral designs and leaves are typical for Duchesse lace. It is made by using thinner threats. The application of specific techniques can lead to very detailed results showing some shadings, dimensions and texture.
